Ringworm is an infectious skin condition that can affect cats and may be passed on to people. However, the name “ringworm” is misleading because this is a fungal infection, and not caused by a worm. Ringworm is actually caused by a fungal infection, and in cats it is known as feline dermatophytosis. Cats become infected by coming in contact with fungal spores in the environment or on the coats of other infected animals.

Cats with ringworm should always be evaluated for underlying disease(s) that may have made them more at risk for this fungal infection. In healthy shorthaired kittens and cats with small isolated lesions, the lesion is often treated with a topical cream containing an antifungal such as miconazole or thiabendazole.
